Two Spartans Earn All-America Honors

Two members of the Michigan State field hockey program were selected to the 2008 Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFCHA) Division I All-American Teams on Monday, Nov. 24. Junior Floor Rijpma was named to the first team, while fellow junior Jeamie Deacon earned second team honors.

Three members of the Michigan State field hockey program were selected to the 2008 Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I All-Regional Team on Wednesday, Nov. 19. Juniors Jeamie Deacon (Wexford, Ireland) and Floor Rijpma (Bunnik, Netherlands) were named First Team All-Region, while sophomore Jantine Steinmetz (Amstelveen, Netherlands) was named to the second team. This is the second-straight year the three have earned the honor, and marks the 10th time in 23 years that the Spartans have had three or more players selected to the all-region teams in a single season.

Field Hockey Falls To Iowa 1-0 In Second Round Of NCAA's

The 10th-ranked Michigan State field hockey team fell, 1-0, to sixth-ranked Iowa in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The game began on Sunday and was postponed in the 43rd minute after heavy snow began to cover the field, and resumed on Monday to finish the remaining time. Iowa's Sarah Pergine scored at 50:44 with an assist to Caroline Blaum to send the Hawkeyes to the NCAA semifinals. The Spartans finish the season with a 17-6 overall record.

The 10th-ranked Spartans received an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament Tuesday evening and will face seventh-ranked North Carolina in the first round on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. Michigan State was also selected as one of four host sites for the first and second round games. It is just the second time the Spartans have been selected to host.

Senior Michelle Ciliberti recorded four points for the Spartans and scored the game-winning goal. Junior Elissa Unger made six saves in goal for Michigan State as it advances to the second round of the tournament to face Iowa Friday at 12:15 p.m. in the Big Ten Tournament Semifinals.
