         <description><![CDATA[At the onset of the fall season, the 2008-09 Michigan State rowing team had one goal on its mind, to prepare to defend the Big Ten Title that it earned just four months earlier.          <description><![CDATA[The Michigan State rowing program closed its fall schedule in fine fashion at the Big Ten Challenge Sunday morning on the Cal-Sag Channel on the Calumet River. The Spartans "A" boat earned a second-place finish in the opening varsity head race, topping every Big Ten team in the race. The only team to finish ahead of the Spartans was Virginia, topping MSU by only two seconds. The Spartans "B" boat was also strong in the varsity head race, finishing fifth overall, in front of all other "B" boats and the "A" boats from Iowa, Indiana and Notre Dame.]]></description>

The Head of the Charles is the largest race in North America, as it plays host to more than 8,000 athletes and 300,000 fans every year. Four rowers with ties to MSU finished in the top 20 in their respective races, highlighted by Lisa Weise, who earned top honors in the Master's Single (under 40) division race. The camp, now in its fifth season, runs from July 22-24; groups of 30-50 children will receive basic rowing instructions, experience a workout on a rowing machine, and spend 30 minutes rowing on the Grand River.
