Men's Golf Signs Will Morris to National Letter of Intent

Michigan State men's golf head coach Sam Puryear announced the signing of Will Morris (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley) to a National Letter of Intent today. Morris will be eligible to join the Spartans for the 2009-10 season.

The inaugural Rees Jones Intercollegiate concluded today at the Haig Point Club on Daufuskie Island, S.C. The Michigan State men's golf team finished the 54-hole tournament in fourth place at 41-over par 905 (298-298-309). Junior Jack Newman led the way tying for fifth, his second straight top-10 finish.

Sophomore Payne Gniewek became the fourth Michigan State men's golfer to post a first place finish during the fall season, as he tied for medalist honors today at the UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate held at the Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. Gniewek's first career intercollegiate title helped the Spartans to a second place team finish, their fourth top-four placement in five fall events.

The Michigan State men's golf team continued its stellar play today, posting the second-best team score of the day, en route to an overall tie for eighth at The Prestige, held at the Greg Norman course at PGA WEST in La Quinta, Calif. Over the final 36 holes, the Spartans carded the third-best team total, behind only champion TCU and runner-up UC Davis.

The Michigan State men's golf team finished the first day of The Prestige, held at the Greg Norman course at PGA WEST in La Quinta, Calif., tied for 12th at 41-over par 617 (327-290). The Spartans struggled in the opening round with a 39-over par 327 to sit in last place, but bounced back in the afternoon to shoot a two-over par 290, the third lowest second round score in the tournament.

Hutchison Wins Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic; MSU Third

Senior Randy Hutchison ended the day with a birdie-eagle-par finish on the final three holes, to earn him his first collegiate individual title, this afternoon at the Fighting Irish Gridrion Classic, held at the Warren Golf Course. Hutchison topped the field by one stroke with a three-round total of even par 210 (69-72-69), setting a new personal best 72-hole mark.

Former Michigan State golfers Casey and Rachel (Meikle) Lubahn will be one of eight duos participating in The Big Break X: Michigan, the Golf Channel's hit reality show. The show debuts tonight, Oct. 7, at 10 p.m. ET and will run every Tuesday until Dec. 16. The series was filmed this summer at the Boyne Highlands Resort in Harbor Springs, Mich.

Senior Randy Hutchison carded a one-over par 141 (69-72) to help the Michigan State men's golf team to a first-day tie for third at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic, held at the Warren Golf Course. Hutchison, who is in a three-way tie for first individually, paced the Spartans to a 36-hole team total of 23-over par 583 (287-296).

The Spartans carded a third round five-under par 279, tied for the sixth lowest in program history, to move their tournament total to four-under 848 (286-283-279).
