Spartans Ready For Ford Field Showdown

Michigan State will face unanimous No. 1 North Carolina in the 10th annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Spartans own a Big Ten-best 5-3 record in the challenge, including a 2-0 mark against the Tar Heels. The game is Michigan State's second ever at Ford Field, site of the 2009 Final Four. MSU and UNC are meeting for the third time in the last five seasons.

Michigan State men's basketball coach Tom Izzo held his weekly press conference Tuesday afternoon to preview the match-up against top-ranked North Carolina. The Spartans (4-1) and Tar Heels (7-0) meet Wednesday at Ford Field in Detroit; the game will be televised on ESPN beginning at 9:15 p.m.

Morgan scored 29 points and No. 5 Michigan State rebounded from its first loss of the season with a convincing 94-79 win over Oklahoma State in a losers' bracket game Friday night at the Old Spice Classic. Travis Walton added 16 points for Michigan State (3-1), which was upset by Maryland 80-62 in the opening round. "That was an interesting game for a coach because, as all you can imagine, nobody felt good about (Thursday night)," Izzo said. "The credit definitely goes to the players."

Greivis Vasquez and Dave Neal each scored 17 points, and unranked Maryland hustled its way to an 80-62 upset of No. 5 Michigan State on Thursday at the Old Spice Classic. After falling behind by three early in the first half, the Terrapins (4-0) countered with a 23-5 run to take the lead for good. Maryland held Spartans star Raymar Morgan to four points and shot 9-for-19 on 3-pointers to 2-of-9 for Michigan State.

Spartans On The Road At IPFW

After opening with a home victory over Idaho, Michigan State hits the road to play at IPFW. The Spartans and Mastodons are meeting for the fourth straight season, although this is the first game in Fort Wayne. This is the first of five straight games on the road for the Spartans, who will play in the Old Spice Classic in Orlando and against North Carolina at Detroit's Ford Field.

Pete Newell Passes Away At Age 93

Pete Newell, the Hall of Fame basketball coach who won an NCAA championship and Olympic gold medal and later tutored some of the game's greatest big men, died Monday. He was 93. Newell coached at Michigan State from 1950-54, leading the Spartans as they made the transition into the Big Ten.

Nix And Sherman To Join MSU Basketball

Michigan State men's basketball head coach Tom Izzo announced Wednesday that two players have signed National Letters of Intent to attend Michigan State next fall and play for the 2009-10 Spartan basketball team. The signees include Derrick Nix (C, 6-9, 275, Detroit, Mich./Pershing) and Garrick Sherman (C, 6-10, 235, Kenton, Ohio/Kenton).
